The causal chain
Commodification / decommodification
Commodification
Process of considering utilities as a commodity thatmust be paid or traded for rather than as an entitlement.
Decommodification
Citizens’ degree of immunization from marketdependency (= strength of social entitlements).
- No resource can be fully commodified or decommodifed.
- For each new regulation attempt, evaluate the direction of thecursor
Decommodification in housing
Role of housing cooperatives
How can commons contribute to post-growth?
Hypothesis : Urban commons initiatives can contribute to a post-growthorganization of society if they lead to the partial decommodification ofgoods or services
Through which mechanisms can commons make a difference?
According to Ostrom (1990), there are four categories of goods :
- Private goods
- Common goods
- Club goods
- Public goods
Commons are questionning
- the concept of resource :
- a resource is always linked to a production system
- the notion of excludability
- the notion of sustractability
Case study of ALJF
Re-structuring the resource
- Abandoned buildings => housing
- Help members to get ride of housing market dependency
- Fulfill basic needs & out of growth imperative
“...the fact that I was able to stay with the ALJF meant that I was able to develop a lot of cultural projects on a voluntary basis, and also participate in another aspect of political life in Lausanne, through a cultural approach.” (Interviewee M)
Case study of ALJF: Excludability
Membership principle with a “soft” boundary
- Low threshold and flexible membership
- “Temporary rooms” for non-members & emergency shelter
- Social equity: housing for precarious population
Case study of ALJF: Substractibility
Shared use
- Shared use and“common pot” (De Angelis and Harvie 2014)
- From owning to accessing
- Reduce resource consumption

La chaîne causale
Marchandisation / Démarchandisation
Marchandisation
- Bâtiments abandonnés => logement
