About General notes

This note shows how to create a General note in Praxis. It is in itself a good example of one possible use of Praxis notes: instructions and user guide. But a General note could be used to share various contents such as:

  • Practical knowledge or learning
  • An organizational practice or internal policy
  • A reflection, analysis, idea or inspiration
  • A summary of an article or conference
  • A strategic resource or a funding source
  • A bibliographic reference or a link to an external tool
  • A current or past collective initiative
  • An archive or an account of an experience
  • Etc.

If you're thinking about adding an Organization or a Glossary term to Praxis, you might want to check out Creating an Organization note and Using the Glossary. If you're ready to create your first general note, just keep reading! 👇

Editing the Note

Give your note a title and add content. Here are some things to know about editing content:

  1. The text editor at the bottom of the "Note Content" box allows you to format your text (headings, bold, italics, blockquote, bullet and numbered lists, alignment).
  2. You can insert a link leading to another Praxis note, or to an external website.
  3. You can add emojis, images, files and videos to your note. Depending on your screen resolution, you may need to click on three horizontal dots located on the far right in the text editor in order to display these options.

About images, files and videos

Images and files are limited to 5 MB. However, you can add as many images and files you want. Videos are embeded from YouTube or Vimeo. You just have to copy-paste the link of a video and it will be displayed in your note.

Customize image in lists

The "Customize image in lists" function allows you to choose the picture which will be used as icon for the note when it is displayed in a notebook, on profile or in a conversation. If you don't choose an image, the first image of the note content will be displayed as icon.

Indicating a Geographic Location

Add a geographic location if you deem it necessary. To do this, check the box "This note is linked to a geographical place" at the bottom of the page. Enter the country, postal code, or relevant address.

Choosing the Authors

The authors of the note are the people who can edit and delete it. It will also be visible on their personal profile for those who can access the note. Choose the authors of the note by checking the appropriate option. If you choose "Managers of the linked community", all the managers of the linked community will be able to edit the note, and you can add others if necessary. If you choose "The following specific users", only the people selected in the text box will be able to edit the note. If necessary, you can Add or remove authors from the note after creating it.

Choosing Visibility

In the “Visibility of note” section, located on the right side of the page, check the appropriate option to determine who on the internet can view the note. This feature is not available for "Organization" and "Glossary" notes, which are all public.

Here are the visibility options available for a note:

  • Public: Anyone, whether logged into En commun or not, will be able to access your note.
  • Members of the linked community: Only members of the linked community will be able to access your note. To choose this option, your note must already be linked to a community, or you must link it at this moment.
  • The following specific users and authors: The authors of the note will be able to view it, and you can also select specific users who will have access. If you check this option, you will be able to choose users in the text box below the visibility options.
  • Authors: Only the authors of the note will be able to view it. This option can be useful for private content or a draft note.

Indicating the License

Choose the license for the note. If you're unsure which type of license to select, consult About Creative Commons Licenses.

Linking a Community

Choose the community linked to your note if applicable. Your note will be visible in the community to which it is linked, making it more accessible to other members of that community.

Integrating into a Notebook

If you want to integrate the note into a notebook, check the box "Integrate in a notebook" at the bottom of the page. If you don't yet know which notebook to integrate it into, you can always do it later.

Creating and editing the Note

When your note is ready, click on "Create the note" at the bottom of the page to finalize and save your work. You can always Edit the note afterward by clicking the three dots "" on your note, and then "Edit"

Congratulations!

You've created your first note. When's the next one?
