Exploring innovative ways to make food more accessible

Montréal’s food system faces several major challenges, including a rising rate of food insecurity, logistical inefficiencies, and significant food loss and waste throughout the food lifecycle.

Montréal en commun (MeC) contributes to experiments aimed at reducing the impacts of these challenges in order to improve access to food for vulnerable populations.

Food innovation initiatives

🍅 Montréal’s Local and Integrated Food System (SALIM)

Led by the Collectif Récolte, SALIM aims to strengthen the supply network of community food organizations in Montréal while improving market access for local producers. Among the many insights and solutions developed, discover:

  • Tomat, an open-source web platform for managing food coupon programs based on rechargeable gift cards;
  • L’aube, pôle nourricier, which seeks to strengthen the production and marketing capacities of farms in Montréal’s West Island; provide local and organic fruits and vegetables to public institutions and community organizations.

🥬 Carte Proximité

Carte Proximité is a prepaid card with a monthly amount for purchasing food sold in solidarity markets. This initiative is led by the Carrefour solidaire community food center.

🌱 Urban Greenhouses

The Urban Agriculture Lab has explored solutions to repurpose underused or unused resources to support urban fruit and vegetable production. Projects include Serres de rueLouvain Ouest greenhouse, and Valorisonsmtl.ca, all led by the Urban Agriculture Lab.

🚚 MutuAli

MutuAli is a digital platform that facilitates the sharing of professional food equipment (commercial kitchens, refrigerated trucks, storage spaces, etc.). The project is led by the Carrefour de l’industrie bioalimentaire de l’île de Montréal (CIBÎM).

🏘 59 Saint-Pierre

The 59 Saint-Pierre pilot project aims to incubate a social economy enterprise. The premises at this address are intended to become an inclusive collective space for welcoming and exchange, economically viable and offering a range of food security services in one of the city’s most disadvantaged neighborhoods. The project is carried out in partnership with the Concert’action Lachine neighborhood table and the borough.

📊 Évaluation en commun

The Research Chair in Ecological Transition at Université du Québec à Montréal coordinated a participatory evaluation process to foster a culture of evaluation and its adoption by partners in MeC’s food initiatives. Évaluation en commun is a digital platform developed to compile evaluation data from various projects.
