VUCAVU Expanded (2020-2022) was a digital strategy initiative funded primarily by the Canada Council for Arts with matching funds from a Toronto Arts Council Open Door Grant and MITACS Accelerate Research Grant. The goal of the project was to broaden access to VUCAVU.com which is an online streaming platform for independent Canadian film and video art. VUCAVU was developed by the not-for-profit Coalition of Canadian Independent Media Art Distributors (CCIMAD) and launched in 2017. Established in 2013, CCIMAD is a group of independent Canadian film and video distributors with the goal to improve international and national accessibility to their catalogues through a shared digital distribution strategy.
The VUCAVU Expanded project sought to broaden and diversify the ways the platform can serve Canadian artists, audiences, and other community members. The focus of this expansion was to bring on additional content providers beyond the original 8 founding member organizations and to work with new programming partners as well as consider the ways in which VUCAVU can better serve in the digital dissemination of Canadian independent media artworks. The multi-faceted and multi-year project involved consultations with different industry professionals in relevant sectors including business development, digital technology, film distribution and library services. COVID-19 significantly impacted the structure and progression of the project, so it was revised in 2020 to take the various impacts and effects into consideration, namely, in response to the surge in requests for content to be made accessible online for educational use and online exhibition for festivals and events.
A more detailed summary of the project in review is available online.
