Overview
Created as part of the Digital Literacy and Intelligence program funded by the Canada Council for the Arts Digital Strategy Fund, the Kick Start Arts Digital Toolkit was developed by Kick Start Arts, SKETCH, and the Department of Illumination in mid-2021. This toolkit is intended to be a guide for the Canadian arts community for best digital resources and practices.
The toolkit is divided into five written guides addressing different aspects of digital tools and methods: Gathering; Your Best Digital Self; Communications; Accessibility and Advocacy; and Monetization. Each of these guides includes an overview of best practices, tools, activities, and advice from selected experts for arts organizations to implement as part of a digital initiative. Each section also has a breakdown of key terminology, as well as links to additional resources. The ‘Communications’ guide also has a large section on online video production, with a step-by-step explainer for organizations and artists on how to create professional video content.
The Digital Toolkit is available in English only.
Comments
Overall this is a user-friendly, informative resource created by Canadian artists and organizations for Canadian artists and organizations. Each of the guides contains a large amount of information and links that are easy to both navigate and understand.
However, some of the information included is already starting to feel dated in relation to how fast technology and digital trends have changed in the past two years—an example of this is the list of social media platforms. Additionally, the list of ‘gathering’ software is dominated by paid or subscription software—more free alternatives would be nice to see.
Finally, many of the strategies included were created for the rapid digital pivot that organizations had to make during pandemic closures and restrictions on gatherings; we are now seeing that many of these changes are being walked back as many organizations pivot back to pre-pandemic operation and programming models. This is not necessarily a critique of Kick Start Arts Digital Toolkit, but an observation of the arts sector as a whole, which raises questions about how digital strategies will be implemented in the future.

Survol
